Trent Williams’ Mother Moved to Tears Recounting 49ers Star’s Journey to First Super Bowl

San Francisco 49ers star left tackle Trent Williams is going to the Super Bowl for the first time.

Williams, who paved the way for San Francisco’s dramatic 34–31 win over the Detroit Lions in the NFC championship game, was greeted by his mom on the field who became emotional when seeing her son wearing an “NFC champions” hat for the first time.

“This has been the longest journey,” Veronica Williams said on NBC Sports Bay Area’s 49ers Postgame Live, breaking into tears. “He’s been on the worst team. … I’m so happy. We’re going [to the Super Bowl]. I’m so proud of him.”

Williams spent the first nine seasons of his career starring in Washington, appearing in just two playoff games. In 2019, he held out the entire year due to contractual and personal grievances with Washington.

The 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. Two months later, San Francisco traded for Williams in April 2020. The 49ers lost two NFC championship games before finally getting over the hump again Sunday night.

“Words can’t describe it,” Williams said. “They really can’t. Man, I’m blessed beyond measure. I’m so proud of this team.”
