Según esta etimología, en tiempos antiguos, se consideraba familia al grupo de personas y esclavos que vivían con el cabeza de la casa. En la actualidad, la familia es el conjunto de personas unidas por lazos matrimoniales, de parentesco o de adopción.
La familia, vista como una comunidad natural y universal, se basa en la afectividad y es de indiscutible importancia tanto a nivel individual como social. Su universalidad radica en que la historia de la familia es, en última instancia, la historia de la humanidad.
En todas las sociedades y en cada etapa de su desarrollo civilizatorio, siempre se ha manifestado alguna forma de estructura familiar. A pesar de los cambios a lo largo del tiempo, la familia siempre ha estado presente, lo que la convierte en el grupo social más universal de todos.
